Alexandria's Newborn Pics

We got Alexandria's newborn pics taken today. She has some dry skin on her feet from all the blood work, she has some red splotches on her cheeks from the oxygen, I really should have ironed her dress but you know what...
I still love the pictures and think they turned out adorable.

Medical

So Today Alexandria is 10 days old today. Out of those 10 days we have spent 8 of them at the Dr's or in the hospital. Her billiruben finally came down to a stable level, it's still a little high but they think it will finish coming down with out the lights.
She is still forgetting to breath so she had to start on Oxygen and wear an O2 monitor. The oxygen isn't an all the time thing just when she is eating or sleeping. (which for a newborn is most of the time.) Hopefully she will catch on to the whole remembering to breath soon and can be off the O2. She gets re-evaluated next week. When we will also see if she can ride in a carseat instead of the carbed.

Christian got a respiratory infection and we saw the Dr. on Friday and he started antibiotics and seems to be on the mend. We are still keeping him and Alexandria separated as much as possible so she doesn't get sick.

Seth is still healthy and happy and active little monkey. He's a little horse but we are just praying he's not getting a cold too.

Sam is trying to kick a chest cold and not share it with Alexandria (or Seth and me). But he has been such an  trooper through all of this and has been such a big help. I don't know what I am going to do when he goes back to work on Saturday.

Me... well my diabetes is still very brittle but is getting better. My body is working better so I am not swelling up nearly as much. And I can comfortably fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans now that I'm not all swollen up. (Not bad for 10 days after having a baby.)

So that's how medically we are doing, taking it day by day and hopefully getting everyone better.

Birth Story III

On Wednesday February 22nd Sam and I spent some time at Labor and Delivery because I had sprung a slow leak but came home because me or Baby weren't in distress.

On Thursday February 23rd we celebrated my birthday.

On Friday February 24th, I had an NST and a Dr appt scheduled in SLC. The boys had been going crazy being cooped up with me on bedrest so Sam dropped me off at the Women's center and he took the boys to the zoo. Because after all it was just another NST and we were going to be induced in 5 days.

My NST was at 10 am. I sat through my NST, my BP's were higher than they had been and weren't coming down, my fluid was a little low (for anyone else) but great for me. She was active and was fine.

Because I had a Dr's appt right after the NST nurses let me go.
I was sitting in the waiting area for the Dr. when the nurse came out and told me to go downstairs to Labor and Delivery because they wanted to monitor my BP's more. So I went down stairs got checked in, all hooked up the monitors and called Sam. I told him not to worry. So they finished the zoo and had lunch while I was being monitored. After about 1 1/2 hours of being monitored, about 12:30pm, my Dr came down and told me that my BP's were in the dangerous range, and I really needed to be induced today. My BP's were any where from 189/109 to 149/61. There was no stability to them. So I called Sam he ran back home to pack the boys bags, get our stuff and then came back and dropped off the boys to my parents.

I decided not to do the medication induction because with Seth it took so long and they didn't think my body would last that long being so unstable. So we did a cervial foley. But the resident that was supposed to come do it took 3 hours, my Dr was not happy about that. They started me on a very high dose of Magnesium to hopefully help me not have seizures and my body shutting down. The Magnesium makes you hot, achey, and just kindof like you have the flu.

So at about 8pm my Dr came to check on me and the Foley popped out, and they started a high dose of pictocin.

During all of this Sam and I watched movies, talked, let the nurses take a bunch of blood, tested my blood sugar a million times along with my BP.

About 10pm they broke my water.

About one am I was contracting hard and long, and my body was getting tired so I had an epidural put in just incase I needed an emergency c-section.

About 2:30am I became unresponsive. They gave me oxygen, kept checking my sugar, did some blood work to see if the magnesium was at a toxic level etc. Lowered the pitocin, the magnesium and my epidural.

About 3:45am I am coming out of it and ready to push. The Dr on call comes in, and we are all set to push and she got called out for an emergency c-section for one of the midwives.

About 4:25am  the Dr is back and I am ready to push. They check my sugars, call the NICU nurses, and I start pushing. I yelled at the Dr to take her out because I was tired and couldn't do it. But she told me no.

At 4:49am Baby Girl Baugh was born. (We hadn't decided on a name yet.) She was checked out by the NICU nurses. They checked her sugars. She checked out fine so they left her with me. She weighed 6lbs 14 oz and was 20 1/2 inches long. We were both monitored in Labor and Delivery for 3 hours to make sure either of our sugars didn't crash.

You have to continue the Magnesium for 24 hours after delivery.  So I had to leave in my IV and catheter. Baby Girl had Coombs positive diagnosis. (Coombs positive is when she has a different blood type than I do. And my body had made antibodies to fight off the different blood type. She got some of the antibodies and they needed to be cleared out of her system. )

At 8am we were moved upstairs to Maternity, to our Luxury sweet of room 229. The next 2 days were spent trying to manage my blood sugars, large clots and swelling, trying to get baby girl to eat, remember to breath, and laying on her billy bed in the nursery to clear her system of the Coombs antibodies and visiting with Big Brothers, Grandpa and Grandma Forsgren, Uncle Matt and Aunt Chrissy, Larrissa, Jodi and Larry, Allison, Kathy and her girls and Aunt Edie.

Sunday afternoon she failed her carseat test. Meaning she couldn't support her weight and she stops breathing in the car seat because of the angle. The test can't be repeated for 12 hours. But it didn't matter she failed again Monday morning, so she was tested to see if she could ride home on a car bed. A car bed is basically a car seat that lays flat. But because she can't support her breathing at an angle that means no swing, no chairs, no reclining on the boppy. But that's ok. She did ok in the car bed but her oxygen levels drop down in that too so someone has to ride in the back with her to make sure she continues to breath.

Sunday night while Sam and I were strolling the hospital we decided that we really needed to pick a name so that we could fill out the birth certificate application. The final 2 names were Gabrielle Grace or Alexandria Avalynn. We decided on Alexandria Avalynn.

We got the car bed all set up Monday morning and we almost ready to go but she had to passed off by the lactation specialist. While she was eating for the lactation specialist she turned purple. She starts breathing again once she is stimulated but it was still a concern. So we stayed a little longer to check her levels again while she was eating. She passed but we have to watch that close too. So Monday we got to come home at about 5pm. The boys got to ride home with us then too.

a very tired Daddy

Because she didn't get to ride home in a car seat I didn't get any leaving the hospital in the car seat pictures like I have with the boys but here is Alexandria right before she went home.

I could have walked out, but because her carbed was already in the car I had to be wheeled out and hold her.
Here is Alexandria in the car bed.
Tuesday we spent the day at home relaxing and recovering.

Wednesday, Feb 29th the day I was supposed to be induced,  we headed to the pediatrician for her 2 day check. She wasn't having bowel movements like she was supposed to and she was starting to turn yellow. So they checked her levels again and they had almost tripled from when she left the hospital so we went home with an order to start lights at home. She had also lost 13% of her body weight which was a big concern. So we started to supplement her feedings with calorie increased formula to her mommy milk feedings.  And I had to give up holding my beautiful baby so she could lay on her billibed.

Wednesday was a rough day for her and for me it was no different. I had swollen up, my feet, legs, stomach, arms, hands and face. I was having trouble taking deep breathes. The Dr said that I was retaining so much fluid that my internal cavity was filling up and putting pressure on my lungs. And we needed to get that fluid to drain off or it can get into my lungs.  So we started some meds for me.

Thursday, today, we headed back to the pediatrician to have more blood work done. Her levels have come down but not enough to come off the lights or the supplements. So we will repeat the tests tomorrow and she can spend one more day on the lights.

So that's how Alexandria Avalynn made her way into the world and made our family complete.
